Kenzo Verdadero is a 6 year old boy of a Filipino couple working here in Singapore. He was diagnosed with Leukemia in November 2009. Since then, the family was required to send him for chemotherapy. Twice a week, he needs a Full Blood Count, for chemotherapy treatments, he stays about 3 to 4 days in the hospital depending on the dosage of medicine. Everyday he takes the chemo drug, Imatinib tablet, that costs SGD40.00 per tablet and he is required to take 2 ½ tablets a day.
During the first three (3) months of the treatment, the used to be active and playful Ken-ken was bed ridden. He underwent blood and platelet transfusions to prevent the blasts from increasing rapidly. If left untreated, the surplus leukemic cells will overwhelm the bone marrow, enter the bloodstream, and will eventually invade other parts of the body, such as the lymph nodes, spleen, liver, and the brain, and spinal cord. These treatments made him suffer too much. His mouth ulcers are far from bearable that he cannot even stand to swallow food or water.
23rd of June, 2010, the BMT consultants informed the family that Kenzo needs to go to a Bone Marrow Transplant in order to have a 90% chance of relapse. Fortunately, the family found a donor for the transplant but would require large amount of money. They need to raise SGD60,000 for the donor alone and another SGD150,000 for the hospitalization. Time is running out and the family cannot find a way to make ends meet anymore.
Kenzo once asked his Mom why him, and why the Leukemia. His Mom couldn't help but cry and said to him in her most comforting words--“God knows that you are a strong and brave boy, that is why he gave it to you…". He's reply was even more heartbreaking-- "Yes, Mama, I am, because I don't want to see you crying”.
The Bundokeros Adventure Club, is now opening it's doors for those who wish to join and participate in our Rappel-for-a-Cause for KENZO on July 31 at Bukit Timah. The proceeds will be used to support Kenzo's continuous medication and his battle against cancer.
